If your furnace is not working, there are also several things you can do to diagnose the problem before calling for a service call:
- Check your thermostat. Is your thermostat working? Occasionally, thermostats can malfunction, causing furnace issues.
- Check the power to your furnace. Is the power on? Though this may seem obvious, oftentimes a furnace that won't "kick on" is disconnected or not powered somehow.
- Is the door to your furnace open? Occasionally, when replacing filters or performing other maintenance, a homeowner may forget to put the door back on the front of the furnace. This is an important step, because the door also has a safety switch that turns off the furnace when the door is open. This is a safety feature.
- Have you replaced the filter recently? Furnaces have filters that need to be replaced often (30 --- 90 days) and if these filters become clogged, most furnaces will shut off.
- Is the light switch next to your furnace turned on or off? If you look in your furnace room, you will usually find it immediately next to the furnace. This does not control the light, however, but it is a shut off switch for the furnace itself. Sometimes children or even adults can accidentally turn off the light switch, not realizing it until the furnace fails to start.
